Health care and data driven innovation in the 4th Industrial Revolution

 

Healthcare is arguably the last major industry to be transformed by the information age.  Deployments of information technology have only scratched the surface of possibilities for the potential influence of information and computer science on the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare. In this talk, the vision, objectives and scientific strategy of HDR UK will be discussed; specifically, the opportunities provided by computer science, artificial intelligence and "big data" to transform health care delivery models.  Examples will be given from nationwide research and development programmes that integrate electronic patient records with biologic and health system data. Two themes will be explored; specifically:

 

How the size of the UK (65M residents), allied to a relatively stable population and unified health care structures facilitate the application of data science to support nationwide quality-assured provision of care.

 

How population-based datasets can be integrated with biologic information and enabled by data science to facilitate (i) epidemiology; (ii) drug safety studies; (iii) enhanced efficiency of clinical trials through automated follow-up of clinical events and treatment response; and, (iv) the conduct of large-scale genetic, pharmacogenetics, and family-based studies essential for precision medicine.

La salud es posiblemente la última industria importante en ser transformada por la era de la información. Los despliegues de tecnología de la información solo han arañado la superficie de posibilidades para la posible influencia de la información y la informática en la calidad y la rentabilidad de la asistencia sanitaria. En esta charla, la visión, los objetivos y la estrategia científica de HDR UK serán discutidos; específicamente, las oportunidades brindadas por la informática, la inteligencia artificial y los "grandes datos" para transformar los modelos de prestación de servicios de salud. Se darán ejemplos de programas nacionales de investigación y desarrollo que integran registros electrónicos de pacientes con datos biológicos y del sistema de salud. Se explorarán dos temas; específicamente:

 

La forma en que el tamaño del Reino Unido (65 millones de residentes), aliado a una población relativamente estable y estructuras de atención de salud unificadas, facilita la aplicación de la ciencia de datos para respaldar la prestación de atención con calidad garantizada en todo el país.

 

Cómo los conjuntos de datos basados ​​en la población se pueden integrar con la información biológica y la ciencia de los datos puede facilitar (i) la epidemiología; (ii) estudios de seguridad farmacológica; (iii) mayor eficiencia de los ensayos clínicos mediante el seguimiento automatizado de los eventos clínicos y la respuesta al tratamiento; y, (iv) la realización de estudios genéticos, farmacogenéticos y familiares a gran escala, esenciales para la medicina de precisión.

Nesta palestra, a visão, os objetivos e a estratégia científica da HDR UK serão discutidos; especificamente, as oportunidades oferecidas pela ciência da computação, inteligência artificial e “big data” paratransformar modelos de prestação de serviços na saúde. Exemplos serão dados a partir de pesquisas  nacionais e programas de desenvolvimento que integram o prontuário eletrônico do paciente com dados biológicos e do sistema de saúde. Dois temas serão explorados; especificamente:Como o tamanho do Reino Unido (65M residentes), aliado a uma população relativamente estável e estruturas de saúde unificada facilitam a aplicação da ciência de dados para apoiar  o assegurmento da qualidade dos cuidados em saúde a nível nacional.Como o conjuntos de dado baseados em população podem ser integrados com informações biológicas e dados de ciência para facilitar (i) epidemiologia; (ii) estudos de segurança de medicamentos; (iii) melhorar a eficiência dos ensaios clínicosatravés do acompanhamento automatizado de eventos clínicos e resposta ao tratamento; e (iv) a condução de amplos estudos genéticos, farmacogenéticos e estudos com base na familia, essenciais para a medicina de precisão.

Mario Plebani, MD 

Dr. Plebani is professor of clinical biochemistry and clinical molecular biology at the University of Padova School of Medicine in Italy. He is chief of the department of laboratory medicine at the University Hospital of Padova and chief of the Center of Biomedical Research. He served as president of the International Society of Enzymology for four years, president of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Clinical Biology for five years, and president of the Federation of Italian Societies of Laboratory Medicine for three years. Dr. Plebani is editor-in-chief of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, co-editor-in-chief of Diagnosis, and associate editor of the International Journal of Biological Markers. He chairs the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) working group on laboratory errors and patient safety. Leer más
